Grettir agrees to accompany a young Paladin called Dallas Strongmain on his quest to find an ancient temple in the wilderness and retrieve what lies beneath the altar. He takes with him Huron the Steady, Silden the Dwarf and Kojar who has recently taken up a post as the Sequarl magician and librarian. Ivar comes with them for the adventure along with the elf, Eldamar. There are a number of encounters on the way but eventually they find a ruined temple in the middle of the Dearth Wood.
The Temple proves to be full of Gargoyles who cannot be struck with mortal weapons. Even those with magic weapons like Ivar and Grettir struggle to land their blows as the Garloyle have the power of flight and are extremely agile. Things become desperate and Ivar draws Cuhunain Ta, the ancient long-bladed, short-hafted spear he won in the Lair of the White Wyrm. Suddenly Ivar and all the humans and dwarves around him, even Kojar, who is no warrior, fall into a berserk rage. The Gargoyles too abandon their hit and run tactics. Only Eldamar the Elf stands aloof of the frenzy and looks on bewildered by the speed and ferocity of the combatants around him. Soon all the gargoyles are smashed upon the ground, for the most part by Ivar and Grettir with their magic blades, and the mortals are completely exhausted. When at last they recover their strength the party search the temple. Under the altar they find a Holy Sword that Dallas claims. There other wondrous and ancient artefacts hidden there and treasure scattered around.
