The Trial of Mitra

Wilfred Stephson has long been an adherent of the God Mitra.  While on Basi, as he receives the adulation of the Bright Kingdom for his public victory in the chariot race, he receives a summons to attend the Temple of Mitra in Telnus on Kos.  Paradoxides provides the transport and conveys him there magically.  There he is invited to swear the lifetime oath to Mitra, to act as his Agent and faithfully obey all his commands.  Once he has done so he is given a great task to perform as a trial of his faith.  Mitra requires him to penetrate the Temple of Hecate in Kasra, on Tyros, and return with certain artefacts to be found there.

Wilf is flown out to the island of Tyros by one of the famous Hippogriff Guards of Cos and given a rendezvous point and time for the return journey.  From there he travels on foot into Kasra and locates the Temple of Hecate.  They are not expecting a lone attacker.  He smashes down the demon doors guarding its entrance; kills a Minotaur guardian; slays several mundane guards and priestesses in the inner fane. Retrieving the artifacts he was sent for, he escapes out of Kasra and is flown back to Cos by Hippogriff.  On presenting the artefacts to the high priestess, he is deemed to have passed the Trial and is confirmed as an Avatar of Lord Mitra
