Grettir returns to Sequarl and takes a mounted patrol up the Black Road to the west. The usual suspects are joined by a dwarf called Ranulf. They follow the Black Road until it runs into the pass leading up into the Edgewere Mountains. There they are astonished to see a half-completed rampart across their path. Girindor can see humans on this wall. They approach under cover of a blizzard conjured by the elf. They find the wall constructed of a material similar to the Black Rock from which the Road is made. Suddenly the Dwarf cries out and disappears into a snow drift. Grettir finds himself negotiating with a unit of Imperial Scouts for Ranulf’s safe return. He promises them a safe conduct and they release Ranulf. They disappear into the snow.
In a separate incident the party captures a pair of snow tiger cubs. These are left in the care of Kinness the Cunning and his wife Shizarem whose ranch on the borders of Sequarl is home to many strange creatures already. They also beat off a night attack by a mountain troll.
