The party return to Magdalen to investigate a tale told them by Jusper Herath of the Sable King. The Sable King was said to be a powerful magician who could transform himself into a Manticore at will, but who had lost his reason in the process, turned upon his own people and become a recluse.
They explore the mountainous interior of the island where the Sable King is said to lurk and indeed see a large black winged creature in the skies at one point. They encounter axe-beaks (large, swift, flightless birds) and the rumoured cannibals of Magdalen turn out to be more than a rumour. At length they discover some ruins and an underground complex full of zombies and some sort of chaos-spawn demon. The Sable King himself proves something of a handful, particularly since, in addition to his shape-shifting powers, it seems that he can also walk unseen. However, after a struggle the Sable King is destroyed, chiefly by Paradoxides and Wilf and his treasury looted.
